The Physics of Bouncing Objects

Physics is the natural science that studies matter, its fundamental constituents, its motion and behavior through space and time, and the related entities of energy and force. One of the most intuitive ways to understand physical forces is through simulation!

Gravity and Restitution

When an object falls, it is accelerated by gravity. When it hits the ground, it bounces back up. The height of the bounce depends on the object’s restitution (or bounciness)—a perfectly elastic object (restitution = 1.0) will bounce back to its original height, while an inelastic object (restitution = 0.0) will not bounce at all.

Notice how changing the restitution above 1.0 adds energy to the system, causing the ball to bounce higher with each collision! This breaks the laws of thermodynamics, but it’s very fun in a simulation.
